First, it is a good idea to start buying chicks rather than buying eggs. When it is your first time of breeding, you do not know how things will work. By buying chicks for the first time, you will get to know and understand the behavior of chickens. If you have understood the behavior of chickens already, then you can decide whether you want to push through with breeding and to hatch more chickens or not.

Then it is very important to prepare your coop ahead of time. A good chicken coop should have protection from predators; it should have an area for laying eggs, and of course a place where they can move around.

The third thing that you could do is to make sure that everything is clean. A clean coop means that your chickens are healthy. The chickens could be sickly and eat them would mean that they are giving you a high risk of getting ill. Moreover, during winter, if your coop does not have enough lighting, you can also prepare hot water so that the chickens can keep themselves warm.
