Family Works – DVD Review and Giveaway

The fine folks at Franklin Springs Media have a great new DVD out: Family Works (Volume One)

Family businesses are among the most enjoyable and fascinating entrepreneurial endeavors to observe. Built with a pioneering spirit and the lively dynamics of family relationships, the stories of families that work together provide a fun and unique view of family life. The Family Works Series is a captivating blend of entertainment, inspiration, and practical business instruction that features business profiles from a variety of family enterprises.

This DVD profiles two family businesses that are already large and successful, although very different. Through these profiles, the creators address common family concerns – having more time together with your family, teaching your children about your values in real life, having time and funds available for Kingdom work, and living out your Christian worldview in the workplace.

  • Cook’s Pest Control is a fourth generation family business. It is the seventh largest pest control company in the U.S., with over 1,300 employees. This service business was started with essentially no up-front investment.
  • Holden Coal is in their first generation of ownership in the emerging energies market – selling coal and servicing and selling coal burning stoves. This product-based business required a substantial investment to purchase an existing business with the needed facilities and equipment. The father, a former pastor, spent years in the process of making the transition.

Both companies are family run with multiple generations serving in the day-to-day business operations.

These stories were informative and inspiring. The point which struck me most was the Christ-centered-ness of the workplace – even at all the many far-flung Cook’s offices. This is in short supply in our country today, and (tragically!) many people seem to feel that your work and your faith don’t/can’t/shouldn’t mix.

I hope in future Volumes, this series will explore smaller businesses. In our journey to Contentment, we would like to run a family business that can support our few additional needs… But we do not have the intention or desire to create a business on the scale of these two.

Most appealing is the freedom involved in a home business. Flexibility, time with family, a legacy . . . but the fears of inconsistent income is huge for me. So is the up front costs.

I would love to win this. We have owned several businesses as a family. They’ve worked well for us. Now life is different. My children are mostly older. Some are adults now and have moved out. I would like new ideas for a family business for my youngest 2 (who are teens).
