Caring Cross – Review and Giveaway

Isn’t that lovely?

It’s called My Caring Cross.

Handcrafted in Bethlehem, from olive wood, by Christian artisans who earn a living wage for their labors.

Beautiful all the way around!

Caring CrossesTM are individually carved from a single unique piece of beautifully grained olive wood pruned from the olive trees around Bethlehem the birthplace of Jesus. Christians have been carving crosses like this for hundreds of years, originally for pilgrims and more recently tourists visiting the Holy Land. Each craftsman receives a fair price to support their family and Christian community. My Caring Crosses are designed to fit comfortably into the palm of your hand as an aid to prayer or meditation. Ideal as your spiritual companion for easing children’s fears, comforting worries and stresses of adults and focusing the prayer of the sick and elderly.

On their website you can find out more about the Caring Cross story.

I purchased two Caring Crosses (who could resist that deal!), and they are simply delightful. The unique wood-grain of the olive branches gives each cross its own personality, while the professional quality cutting and finishing leaves them smooth and well-fitted to the palm of your hand.

We are not particularly enamored of the idea of a “talisman”, but these will definately find a place in our home. Possibly as:

  • A wall hanging (have you seen my wall of crosses?)
  • A paperweight
  • A subtle, classy desk piece / paperweight for Wolf at work
  • A component of the inventive table decorations and centerpieces to which our children often treat us
  • A good “busy hands” item for the youngest when we’re reading schoolwork that’s not fascinating to him
  • A sweet surprise tucked into Wolf’s suitcase when he travels (blessedly rare)
  • And yes, probably as a bit of a “worry stone” for those prayer times when I’m extra challenged by letting go of certain things

I will also be keeping them in mind as gifts!

BUY IT

Run, don’t walk, and you can order your cross(es) and pay via PayPal directly from the My Caring Cross website.

An individual cross, complete with information card and red velveteen gift bag, is only $5 + $3 shipping, or – as long as they are running their current special – you can order two crosses (with cards and bags) for just $10 (including shipping). They even have discounted larger quantities for mission work, church groups, or fundraising!

Two Winners

Happy New Year!

To start things off with a bang, RaffleCoptor and Random.org picked the winners for both of our recent giveaways!

The winner of the Shabby Apple BACIAMI! dress is **UPDATE** Since our first winner, Karen, did not respond to the notification email, we have drawn a new winner. Congratulations to Jordyn, #48, who won for just leaving a comment on the giveaway post! She has already provided her shipping information, and should have her dress in no time.

And the Kosher Casuals drape cardigan winner is Tammy, #19.

I’ve emailed both winners, and hopefully both will respond promptly and claim their prize. (I guess “hopefully” might not be a universal sentiment, since if they don’t we will draw someone else).

Congratulations, ladies. A big THANK YOU to everyone who entered, as well as the gracious sponsors who made these fun giveaways possible.

Kosher Casual Review and Giveaway

I’ve found another great shop for modest clothing – Kosher Casual!

They were kind enough to send me one of their lovely Open Drape Cardigans for review (like the photo, only in black). The garment is well-made and attractive, they were a pleasure to deal with, and the shipping was quick.

Kosher Casual features a lot of products good for layering. They seem to follow the philosophy that if the skin is covered to a certain place, then you are modestly covered.

To that end they have layering shells, snug tanks, stretchy “sleevies,” etc.

And, hey, they include a piece of Israeli Kosher Bazooka bubble gum with each order! Bazooka Joe speaks Hebrew!

My personal taste is to have clothing be less form-fitting, so I really like the draped front of this top. Unfortunately, the sleeves are cut rather snug. With stretchy fabric, it’s not that it’s binding, or too tight – just not me.

My loss is your gain, however:

I’m going to pass this lovely item on to one of my readers!

Just enter using the handy-dandy RaffleCoptor form below before the year ends…

Shabby Apple Giveaway!

You’ve probably seen the lovely women’s dresses from Shabby Apple featured on other blogs (they also make clothes for girls, and maternity) – and now you have a chance to win one right here!

I am excited to announce that I am hosting a giveaway for a BACIAMI! dress in your choice of size.

Although their description is a bit racy, I chose this dress from the giveaway options offered because it was something that could be worn in a classy, modest way. I like the 3/4 length sleeves, too!

Bedecked with a tailored bodice, boat neck and elbow-length sleeves, the empire waisted frock hugs close to the body for a figure conscious shape. The knee-length skirt has just a bit of flare which is accentuated by the variegated bands of the Sarah Hansen-designed fabric. This dress is made from a leightweight, delicate fabric and FITS GENEROUSLY on our fit guide.

Dress made of Cotton Poplin, 97% Cotton and 3% Spandex.

Just use the handy-dandy RaffleCoptor form below, and enter before the end of the year (some entries can be done every day!)

Tropical Traditions Laundry Soap – Review and Giveaway

I recently had the opportunity to test out the Laundry Detergent from Tropical Traditions.

Their information describes it as follows:

  • Powdered Laundry Detergent is safe and effective at ALL temperatures on whites, permanent press, bright colors, pastels, prints, and delicates in hard or soft water. (Not suitable for Silk or Wool)
  • Tropical Traditions Powdered Laundry Detergent is non-toxic, environmentally safe and contains no phosphates.
  • Powdered Laundry Detergent cleans and safely bleaches your clothes with the added power of Oxygen Bleach Destainer and Deodorizer.
  • With our Laundry Detergent there are no harmful by-products upon decomposition.
  • Powdered Laundry Detergent dissolves as completely as liquid detergents and rinses away completely leaving no residue in your clothes.
  • Powdered Laundry Detergent costs less to use than commercial liquid detergents and costs no more to use than commercial powdered household laundry detergents.
  • Powdered Laundry Detergent contains no dyes, perfumes, fillers or phosphates.
  • It looks just like any other laundry powder. It does, in fact, dissolve easily and well even in cold water. No cloying perfume scent. All good so far…

    And?

    The clothes are very clean.

I think my favorite part is how easily and thoroughly it rinses out. Doing the wash by hand I am far more aware of this consideration than I would be with a washing machine!

Want to try it? Tropical Traditions has a free gift for you through their Referral Program:

If you are a new customer, as an As For My House reader you will receive a complimentary copy of the book Virgin Coconut Oil: How it has changed people’s lives and how it can change yours! by Brian and Marianita Shilhavy with your order. This book is filled with testimonies and research showing how healthy coconut oil is, and it also includes over 85 recipes showing how one can incorporate coconut into their diet.

Just select “Referred by a friend” when asked, and in the box that says “How did you hear of us?” enter my Sponsor ID number: 5689476.

…and be sure to come back and share your results!

    Want to win it??

Check out my cool new Rafflecopter giveaway form, below!

Please note that some entries require making a blog post to qualify, but only entries that are entered in the Reafflecopter form will be actual contest entries. This is something new for us, so I want to make sure nobody misses out.

Costume WINNER!

Another Costume Giveaway!

Woohoo! More fun for YOU and me! :)

For those of you who missed the season’s First Giveaway, Anytime Costumes has generously agreed to host a second one here at As For My House!

We had a bit of a sad turn with our review products this time, unfortunately.

R.T. wants to dress up as Captain America. We can tell whose kid he is, right? Anyhow, we’d already gotten him a basic Cap costume (see my Life on the Road post), but needed the accessories.

We ordered the gloves, and the all-important shield (choosing the adult size, which is too big, but fun, over the child size, which seemed puny).

Unfortunately, UPS wasn’t kind to the shield (which, in their defense, is a big, flimsy curve of plastic, packed in a wide but flat-ish box – just begging to be squished). Although it’s still just peachy with the kids (as you can see in the photo), it was a big disappointment to Wolf, who wanted it to hang on the wall with his Cap artwork and collectibles.

I emailed the contact I have there, and she was very apologetic. She said that they would file a claim with UPS for the damage, and that had I been a “regular” customer they would have immediately refunded my payment.

That was nice, but the problem was that I didn’t want my money back (literally or figuratively) – I wanted that shield. Which, she said, is sold out for the season, along with the child sized one.

She offered to send me something else to review, but I was at a bit of a loss… They didn’t have anything else we needed for Halloween, and in the midst of moving I wasn’t feeling up for picking out a kids’ costume for general dress-up use to add to the possessions to be moved.

In the end, we got a pair of pink fairy wings, which will probably be what Jewel wears for her Wasp costume (we’re having a hard time getting any traction on that one!).

But enough about my saga – here’s the good news for you:
